On 27 June 2007 Derrick had an accident when mountain biking in Wales. He has severe spinal injuries. He had surgery at hospital
in Cardiff, and is now at the National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville near Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire.
The NSIC has excellent facilities and are looking after him very well. He is paralysed from the chest down, but has already
regained some sensation and movement in his limbs and is determined to take full advantage of this. He has full mental capacity and is tackling the challenge with his usual
determination and spirit. He can already move himself in his wheelchair.
When eventually he leaves Stoke Mandeville at the end of his intensive recovery programme, he may with the help of technical aids
and suitably built accommodation be able to work from home in Twyning. His aim is to return as near as possible to normal life there with his family, and enjoy the company of his
many friends.
The Stoke Mandeville medical, nursing and support staff are providing first class care and advice. Derrick's family and friends
continue to give him great support. Visitors are very welcome - see Visiting Derrick where you can book a time and find
directions. You can also make a virtual visit by reading and contributing to Derrick's blog - please do join him there.
The first purpose of this webpage - still under construction after 3 months - is to provide a focus and forum for continuing
support to Derrick, his wife Lisu and his children. At a later stage, we hope that Derrick's experience will (through this page) form a useful checklist for other people who
suffer similar spinal injuries. Some of them may wish to develop it further and adapt it to their own use.
